GENTECH

The Gothic Industrial Revolution

GENTECH have been around on the live circuit now for around 2 years, debuting in Glasgow supporting the Merry Thoughts and continuing on to play gigs with other well known bands in the Goth/Industrial world. These have included All Living Fear, Faithful Dawn, The Marrionettes, Chaos Engine, The Sisters of Murphy, These Crimson Dreams and many others. Most of these have been in Glasgow and Edinburgh to date, with just one outing to England when they were invited to play at Hybrid ’97 at Nottingham’s Rock City.

Who Are We

Well, that is a good question. GENTECH is the spawn of Paul Maclaren, the vocalist and wordsmith of the band, whilst the guitar-work is carried out with utilitarian drive (read brutal simplicity) by Rob Sutherland. The rest of the back line is produced by a PC and a standard Creative Labs AWE32 Value soundcard. This is programmed by Paul and, to a lesser extent at present, Rob.

What Are We

Well, this is a difficult one. GENTECH was originally formed as a pure Goth band in 1996, although at this time it had several different names. However as time went by we found ourselves deviating from the traditional goth formula and started branching out in new directions, drawing our inspiration from a wide variety of sources. Paul was becoming heavily influenced by the European Industrial scene, with bands such as Project Pitchfork, Front 242, Death in June and Wumpscut to name but a few featuring prominently in his collection. The hard synthetic sounds of these bands were married with the hard edged guitar style developed by Rob over the years, a style influenced by Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but modernising the sounds and beefing them up a lot. It was obvious from the start that this would never end up as a typical jangly goth outfit!

Where Are We Going

GENTECH is a constantly evolving and mutating entity with almost Darwinian tendencies, twisting and turning as it strives towards perfection. We are determined not to fall into a rut and churn out song after song all of which sound the same, we believe in variety! If you enjoy dark music with a diverse blend of intricacy and hard power then you will love GENTECH. It is this strange mix which characterises our music, whether it is a fast paced dancefloor track, or a more subtle song which is listened to at home. Have a listen to our CD, DNA, a heavy dance floor EP that we recorded recently, or come along to one of our gigs to experience this for yourself, I think you will like it.
