About the society

Coming Events

The first thing on the horizon is ‘Conception’, our pseudo-regular club. It’ll be playing a range of music, based around goth and rock stuff, with the emphasis being firmly on new music. This will be taking place at Teviot union, on Wednesday 28th October with bands, The Dream Disciples and Nervosa playing, also free sweets given out at the door.

Coming up at the end of this month is the Whitby Gothic weekend which the society attends twice yearly, also so that no one feels left out, currently proposed for the future is a clubbing and shopping weekend in London and a trip to the second OzFest.

Aims / Purpose of society

  1. To oversee the organisation and running of a regular Goth & Rock club within the student Unions. This club will be open to all students and their guests, although entrance shall be cheaper for society members.

  2. To organise and promote Goth & Rock gigs within Edinburgh and specifically within the Unions. Entrance to these gigs will be cheaper for members, where possible.

  3. To provide a regular newsletter to members, giving details of gigs, bands and the scene in general.

  4. To provide a music lending library service to the society members which will be kept in a locked cupboard. Items will only be able to be removed by a member of the committee. This library will also serve as a source of music for the club.

  5. The society was never intended to be just about "goth music" or "rock music". It’s for a broad spectrum of tastes from industrial to cheesy 80’s rock, from goth tunes to violent punk, from new wave metal to the truly unidentifiable! It’s never been a terribly serious society either. You might have noticed this by now.

Benefits of joining

Basically, joining the society offers the following advantages:

  • Discounts: We are currently negotiating discounts for society members from shops such as: Ground Control, Alchemy Gothic, Joe Cool, Scayles …

  • Cheaper entry into the clubs and gigs put on by the society.

  • You get the stunning e-mail discussion list, containing opinion, intrigue, and libellous humour.

  • Access to the society music library.

There is a distinct goth slant to the society, mainly because the committee consists mainly of goths. However, we’re very keen that this should be a goth and _rock_ society too, where rock is left suitably vaguely defined (ie. metal, industrial, punk... everything goes).

Hence, there is a big opportunity for folks with music tastes which differ from ours to help shape the society

Meetings

The society has been growing for two years now, from its initial membership of around thirty in the first year we managed to expand to over a hundred last year.

One of the best ways of meeting other members of the society has got to be to come along to a meeting.

The society meets every Wednesday at the Cauldron on South Clerk Street with the official committee meeting being held on the first Wednesday of every month.

These are open to all, as an opportunity to put forward ideas and suggestions – the more ideas the better. This society is run for our members by our members, if you have an idea of something you want done that you feel would be of interest to other members then simply put it into action. It doesn’t take much and the society is designed to make it as easy as possible for you to achieve what you want!

Typically a meeting will start at around 8:00pm ish and finish when people get bored, or drunk.
